design bio

My interest in design came out of a desire to create my own website. I began teaching myself HTML, CSS, and Javascript, and before I knew it, I realized I was doing an awful lot of work for just one site. However, I also found I really enjoyed what I was doing, and wished to pursue it further. For me, both web and graphic design represent a perfect balance between the creative and the logical. Primarily self-taught, my current skill set includes:

  • XHTML / CSS
  • PHP / mySQL
  • JavaScript / AJAX
  • XML
  • Database Design
  • Adobe Dreamweaver CS3
  • Adobe Photoshop CS3
  • Adobe Flash CS3 / Actionscript 3.0
  • Adobe Illustrator CS3
  • Adobe InDesign CS3

featured poster

Evita - This poster/postcard design was created with Adobe Photoshop to promote the Chance Theater's 2008 summer musical. The inspiration was somewhat art deco, with a touch of Sex Pistols thrown in for the title font, to lend it a populist edge.

featured website

Jonathon Lamer, Actor - This website, built for a fine actor and a good friend of mine, features standards compliant XHMTL and tableless CSS design, and is completely maintainable by it's owner via an administrative site powered by PHP and a MySQL database.

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • XHTML / CSS
  • PHP / MySQL
  • Javascript / AJAX
  • Flash/ActionScript 3.0

music bio

I began studying the piano at a very young age, and went on to earn my masters degree in music. Along the way, I've also picked up voice, guitar, and electric bass. While classically trained, my musical tastes run from classical to jazz to modern rock, though I'm usually pretty specific about the individual artists I like. When at the piano, however, I particularly enjoy playing Scarlatti, Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, and Rachmaninoff. I am a theater veteran, and have music directed numerous productions, including Sweeney Todd, And the World Goes Round, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Sunday in the Park with George, for which I received an honorable mention for a Backstage West Garland Award. A member of the Chance Theater Company as well as the Music Teacher's Association of California, I have been teaching privately for 7 years, and draw inspiration from watching my students grow.

Gymnopedie No.1 - Erik Satie: As a composer, Satie may politely be referred to as eccentric, but he still wrote one of my all-time favorite melodies. Short and simple, it seems to float in midair.

reviews

"...musical director Bill Strongin has an acute ear for Sondheim's shattering discords and the occasional haunting, heart-rending ballad." - Sunday in the Park, Eric Marchese, Backstage West

"...Bill Strongin gets the most praise as accompanist Manny. Strongin plays a number of challenging pieces well, and his character puts up with Callas' condescension with aplomb." - Master Class, Alessandra Djurklou, Long Beach Press-Telegram

"Bill Strongin captures the period with catchy original songs and a self-confident onstage presence at the piano..." - Anaheim Home Companion, Eric Marchese, OC Register

"...the unctuous but suavely talented piano man..." - Anaheim Home Companion, Melinda Schuppman, Backstage West

"...musical director Bill Strongin's commitment to the score creates a substantial platform for the performers..." - Into the Woods, Eric Marchese, OC Register

theater bio

Not always content to rest behind the scenes, I have also appeared onstage in a number of roles, including Jack Worthing (Ernest in Love), Marcus Lycus (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum), and Agustin Magaldi (Evita). Overall, I'm a veteran of over thirty productions, and I love playing British roles, lounge singers, and smooth talkers in general. I'm currently a company member and music director at the Chance Theater, a rapidly growing theater company in Anaheim, named the "Best Small Theater" in Orange County by Orange Coast Magazine in 2008. We've also received accolades from MyFoxLA, Backstage West, the OC Register, and have had some of our production photos featured in American Theater Magazine. If you haven't seen a show yet, feel free to contact me. I may be able to provide you with discounted or even free tickets.

Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical
book by Gerome Ragni and James Rado
music and lyrics by Galt MacDermot

The first rock musical, and one of the most adventurous, outlandish, and ultimately profound musicals ever. Join the Tribe, a group of long-haired, politically active hippies, as they gather to usher in the dawning of a new age in America. Possessing a timelessness and a meaning that outlives the era of “flower power”, this award-winning musical will provoke you to take part in a celebration of life, and contribute to the passionate cry for hope and change.

I'll be playing the bass and getting high off the fogger.

reviews

"(Dir. Kysa) Cohen gets light, assured acting all around, beginning with Bill Strongin's Jack, who's earnest and clean-cut along the lines of Roger Moore." - Ernest in Love, Eric Marchese, Orange County Register

"The acting was appealing across the board. Real standouts were...Bill Strongin as the hapless second policeman, Slater. As the play's straight man, he brought just the right amount of earnestness to the part. Think Fred McMurray or Edward Norton." - Funny Money, Marchelle Hammack, The Beachcomber

"...Bill Strongin (who provides the excellent piano accompaniment for the show's dozen and a half songs) plays three parts, the most memorable of which is the very very French Professor Engerrand. I found Strongin's French accent (which seems to have several more nasal vowels than the actual French language) to be the funniest thing in the entire production." - Anne of Green Gables, Stephen Stanley, StageSceneLA.com

other stuff

Obviously, I love the arts, whether visual or performing, though I'm keenly interested in foreign languages as well. Actually, this fits in nicely with my other pursuits. I often relate music to language (the voice, after all, was one of the very first instruments), and of course, web programming is a language and an art form of it's own. At any rate, I'm constantly reading, listening to music, or watching films in French and Italian. I've also studied a little Russian and Korean, and I find I can read some Spanish. Other useless and random things about me:

  • I was born in Omaha, NE, and I love college football.
  • I have a pilot's license, but have not flown in a long time.
  • The last film I saw that I would call outstanding was Pan's Labyrinth.
  • When it comes to popular artists, Dean Martin, Peter Sellers, the Beatles, and David Bowie are among my favorites. But if you know who Serge Gainsbourg is, you'll score some points with me.
